In 2008, the Boards of the Canadian Institute for Historical Microreproductions (CIHM) and the Canadian Association of Research Libraries (CARL) concluded an historic agreement to merge CIHM and AlouetteCanada to create Canadiana.org.
All parties renewed their commitment to a coordinated and sustained program to digitize Canada's information and knowledge resources, and to provide easy online access to the extraordinary wealth of these resources by and about Canadians.
Alouette Canada is an open digitization initiative that aggregates the content of digital collections from across Canada for one-stop searching. Their goal is to “create , disseminate , preserve and sustain the knowledge base of Canadian memory organizations in digital form , for the purpose of benefiting all Canadians.”
The Saskatchewan Digital Alliance is working with Alouette Canada to create a Saskatchewan portal within Alouette. The digitization grant recipients will make their collections available through Alouette Canada on the recommendation of the SDA.
Archives Canada is an official archival portal maintained by the Canadian Council of Archives (CCA), and is a joint initiative of CCA, the Provincial – Territorial Archival Networks, and Library and Archives Canada. The site offers many digital projects with photographs, maps, and documents developed around Canada's history.
Canadiana.org is governed by an active volunteer Board of Directors made up of distinguished Canadian scholars and representatives of major research libraries from across Canada, together with partners who strongly champion access to Canadian heritage. Our pan-Canadian governance structure recognizes the need for many types of partners and sectors to participate in the governance and financial support of the organization and its vision.
The Multitype Library Board , established under the Libraries Co-operation Act, provides a forum for appointed representatives of all library sectors in Saskatchewan to meet and discuss way in which libraries can cooperate to share resources and services. The SDA was established by the Multitype Library Board with the intent of reaching out to other communities such as archives , museums and historical societies to harmonize digitization practices and to co-operate where possible.
